Welcome!

Salvador is a beautiful city, with a lot of culture and history to be explored. Caminhos Alternativos (Alternative Tracks) offers a different approach for those who want to get to know the city beyond the conventional tourist spots.

Salvador is the third largest Brazilian city with about 3 million inhabitants. It is located in the state of Bahia and is Brazil´s main domestic tourist destination. Beaches, squares, historical monuments and the warmth of its people bring the city´s history to life. Indigenous, African and European influences have all contributed to Salvador´s unique culture.

Tourist guidebooks describe the highlights of Salvador’s history and culture, but mostly ignore the sociocultural reality of the city. What they do explain is extremely basic and often they fail to show what life in the city is really like. Not because they don’t want to, but you would need very large, unwieldy guidebook for that.

Caminhos Alternativos offers individual or small group trips, presenting a different view of Salvador. Our itineraries include Salvador’s periphery, markets and fairs, social projects, traditional local food or even a bike ride in a nature park. This way you can get to know the day-by-day of the people who make the city move. Salvador is an incredible city and the contrast between the city’s postcard image and the reality of life of the vast majority of its inhabitants is a part of this.

There is much more to Salvador! Contact us for information about our various itineraries and get to know the city beyond the guidebooks and tourist traps.
